2005 - 2006 Season
In the 2005/06 season; Co Adriaanse announced that his secret weapon would be Pepe. Pepe ended up being one of the best defenders in the league; after solid performances in the Champions League; and great ratings game after game by the Portuguese media. The previous year he was on the bench most of the season, thinking that his move to Porto would be a waste since they had Pedro Emanuel, Jorge Costa , and Ricardo Costa as central defenders. Adriaanse wanted to rely on youth; and he chose 3 players that he would turn into stars. Pepe of course; Ricardo Quaresma and Paulo Assunção, they all had breakthrough seasons.

Pepe was the heart of the defence, he was the club's first choice; and he was the only central defender playing, since the Dutch coach wanted to use a 3-3-4 formation.
